Fishing in New Hampshire is one of the best kept secrets on the east coast. In this article, I will explain based on my experience as an avid angler what are the best places to camp and Fish in New Hampshire.
Personally, I am a huge fly fisherman and love to camp near rivers that are productive and accessible. However, I do also enjoy a great kayak/canoe fishing too on either lakes or ponds. I will share my top 5 recommendations below for all styles of preferred fishing.
1. Lake Francis State Park - Fly Fishing
To start, my favorite place to camp in New Hampshire for fly fishing is Lake Francis State Park Campground. Located in Pittsburg, NH. Lake Francis is loaded with Landlocked Salmon and all species of trout.
With the campground located right on the mouth of the lake, there is also direct access to the "trophy stretch". The stretch is 2.5 mile long section of fly fishing only waters. With the stretch being stocked constantly throughout the year by the state and local associations, this stretch is extremely productive and offers countless technical and accessible holds to some very rewarding fish... 2. Greenfield State Park - Kayak/Canoe Fishing
Greenfield State Park is without a doubt a great place to visit if you are looking for some chunky bass! Located in... you guessed it... Greenfield, NH. This state park is a fantastic park to visit if you are interested in having a relaxing camping experience in a semi-remote location with cell reception. I enjoy going to this campground and recommending it because of its location and options. It is a huge campground if you have kids that enjoy biking around, and enjoy exploring. Located a 10-15 minute walk away from Otter Lake, there are canoes and kayaks for rent! I recommend renting these kayaks and going out for an evening fish or even sunrise if you are an early riser! There is alot of great structure and vegetation to hold alot of hungry large mouth bass. Here is a picture of a large mouth that I caught right from the camp ground beach last year (2023)!
3. Russell Pond Campground - Float tube fishing
Located in absolute bear country, Russell Pond Campground is one of the most serene and enjoyable places to fish in NH. I love going to this campground because it is located at a semi-alpine pond that is considered a cold water fishery. Stocked by the State with brook trout and other species, this campground is right off I-93N exit 31 and you would never know. It is tucked away up a steep switch back road with barely any cell reception if any.
One of the most enjoyable experiences that you can have if you are looking to have a full nature immersion experience without having to drive countless hours. Camper be ware though!... There are many many critters here... Located strategically with the fresh pond, altitude, and dense vegetation animals choose to hunker down near this area as a home base. I recommend this pond for float tube fishing because its a large cold water fishery that is accessed easily through their sandy beach or launch. The best type of fishing in this pond is for trout, so make sure you choose your tackle correctly, and if you were to go with the fly, there are some monster dry fly eats here!
